Coastguard
Units are operated by volunteers who rely on donations and grants from a variety of sources. The
money raised is not guaranteed and the Coastguard operates from
year to year in a hand to mouth manner. This makes it difficult
for us to plan for future needs and contingencies.
A new 6.8m Coastguard rescue vessel costs approximately $200 000
to build and launch. This money is raised through extensive fundraising
both in the local communities in which the Coastguard Unit operates
and from regional and national efforts.
An active volunteer is trained to carry out marine search and rescue
and time and expertise are invested in the training. In addition
each active volunteer is fitted out with a variety of safety equipment
in order to perform their job, safely and effectively. It costs
approximately $3000 to outfit an active volunteer and this equipment
has a useful life span of three years.
Coastguard rescue vessels have to be maintained to strict operational
standards, to ensure they can respond to an incident as soon as
they are alerted. Maintenance of engines, superstructure, electronics,
survival equipment and launching equipment is conducted regularly
and costs on average $20,000 annually, not including the volunteer
time involved or the major cost of fuel.
Coastguard does not charge for the life saving services it provides,
but we do ask for donations from the people we rescue. Many survivors
give donations, but there are also many who do not.
